Chandigarh : Despite dipping temperatures in the region, there was no let up in enthusiasm for the 59th Republic Day celebrations in Chandigarh and in various places in Punjab and Haryana.
In Chandigarh, the national flag was unfurled at the Sector 17 Parade ground by Pradip Mehra, the adviser to union territory administrator, amid tight security. He highlighted the steps being taken to make Chandigarh a global city.
In Punjab, Governor S.F. Rodrigues unfurled the flag at Patiala, 90 km from here. A colourful cultural programme followed the march past by personnel from security forces and students.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal unfurled the national flag in the industrial city of Ludhiana.
Security forces remained on high alert all over Punjab following intelligence reports of possible terror strikes on Republic Day.
