Six people were killed on the spot while 10 others were critically injured and were rushed to two city hospitals, Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Ratan told IANS.

Five died in hospital, Ratan said, adding all the victims were adult male labourers from Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur and Bareilly.

The accident took place around 3.20 a.m. when the trucks collided at a crossing near Hapur checkpost in the dense fog, Ratan said.

He said there were no streetlights as it was pitch dark when the accident occurred.

The drivers apparently failed to see each other in the fog, leading to the accident, said Ratan, adding that the drivers of both the trucks have survived and are presently undergoing treatment in a Ghaziabad hospital.

The trucks were heading from opposite directions, one was on its way from Alwar in Rajasthan to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, other was heading to New Delhi from Hapur.
