The 18-inch statue of the mother of Jesus Christ was stolen from Dhori Colliery of Bokaro district, about 160 km from the state capital.

According to a priest, the statue was found missing when the door of the room where it was kept was opened Sunday morning. The wooden statue is said to be centuries old.

Bokaro police has announced that anyone who provides information about the statue will get a reward.

“We have launched an operation to arrest the thieves. It seems some local criminals might have stolen the statue,” said Anurag Gupta, deputy inspector general of police (Bokaro range).

Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, the archbishop of Ranchi, said: “It seems the statue has been stolen to hurt the sentiment of the Christian community. What can one get by stealing a wooden statue? The state government should take the incident seriously and ensure that the statue is recovered.”
