Bolivia to open embassies in South Africa, India and China

La Paz : As part of the so-called peoples’ diplomacy, Bolivia will open embassies in India, South Africa and China, according to Foreign Ministry sources.

Deputy Foreign Minister Hugo Fernandez said the government has the necessary resources to open these three embassies, whose ambassadors will be appointed in due time.

The top Bolivian official noted that the opening of diplomatic missions in New Delhi, Johannesburg and Beijing has been the government’s dear wish since 2006, as it allows strengthening relations with those countries and international agencies.

Bolivia has 38 embassies and more than 100 consulates in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

President Evo Morales said that the first ambassador to Iran would present his credentials in the next few days.

Bolivia strengthened its international position in 2007, when it improved diplomatic relations with Chile and increased its participation in Latin American integration.

It also improved its historic relations with Iran, President Morales visited Italy and Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca traveled to China.

In addition, both the Organization of American States and the presidents of the member countries of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) have expressed support for the process of democratic changes boosted by the Morales government.

Bolivia has relations with most member countries of the United Nations.
