“The rainfall was caused because of a western disturbance (in Gangetic West Bengal) and it will continue in the coastal areas of West Bengal and south Bengal districts and Kolkata,” said G.C. Debnath, director of the Kolkata Regional Meteorological Centre.

He said the sky was expected to clear up Thursday morning in Kolkata and its adjoining districts.

However, Debnath said it would remain slightly cloudy in south Bengal.

“The rainfall might also continue in north Bengal districts and there is a probability of snowfall in Darjeeling hills owing to a sharp drop in the minimum temperature,” Debnath added.

Last week, a depression was formed over Kolkata and Gangetic West Bengal due to a western disturbance in the neighbouring state of Jharkhand.

The hill district of Darjeeling also witnessed snowfall on Jan 28, bringing the mercury down.

While the first report of snowfall came from 8,497 feet high Tiger Hill, places like Jalapahar, Ghoom, Jorebungalow, Tung, Dali and Three Mile in Darjeeling were covered in four inches of snow.
