Media focusing on negative issues: Speaker Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI, Jan 30 APP: Somnath Chaterjee, Speaker of Lok Sabha said on Wednesday that Indian media had only been focussing on negative issues.

Speaking at a book launching ceremony in Kolkata Press Club, he called for “constructive criticism” in reporting issues without malice or personal attack.

“I say this with regret that only negative issues are highlighted in the Lok Sabha proceedings by the media which don’t give much importance to positive aspects,” he remarked.

Asking the media to play a constructive role in a democracy, Chatterjee said “today we are witnessing confrontationist politics and competitive journalism” in the country.

“In most of the cases, we find marketing people in some of the big newspaper houses determining the editorial policy, and this is unfortunate,” he added.

Chaterjee requested the media that bare news should be highlighted with due importance and the criticism can be there in the editorial.
