Chennai : The Tamil Nadu government Wednesday urged lawmakers to part with a portion of their constituency development funds for increasing power generation in the state.
The government “would encourage power generation efforts” if the members of state legislatures and parliament from the state were willing to give their constituency development funds for this purpose, Power Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy said in the state assembly.
Veerasamy, however, did not give details of the proposed plan.
The minister added that the government would explore the possibility of generating energy from sunlight.
Officials of the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) will visit Japan and Germany to study their low-cost solar energy generation model, he said.
In India it costs Rs.250 million to generate one mega watt of solar power where as Germany and Japan produce the same amount of power by spending only Rs.120 million, Veerasamy added.
