“We are closely monitoring the situation and keeping a close watch to ensure that other elements don’t slip through with the refugees,” Coast Guard chief Vice Admiral Rusi Contractor said here ahead of its 31st anniversary.

“We are monitoring the situation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but it is possible that one or two (Tamil rebels) might slip through,” Contractor added.

Asked about reports that Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief V. Prabhakaran had entered Tamil Nadu, he said: “We don’t have any information on that.”

A narrow sea divides Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, which is home to thousands of Tamil refugees from the war-hit island nation. Escalating fighting in Sri Lanka has sparked fears of possible guerrilla movement into southern India.
