More than 3,000 lawyers chanting anti-Musharraf slogans burnt his effigy and demanded the immediate release of Chauhdary Iftikhar, who is under house arrest since his dismissal from his post as chief justice.

Similar rallies, attended by thousands of lawyers and political activist, were also held in Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Gujranwal and several other areas.

The legal fraternity paid tribute to Chauhdary Iftikhar and also boycotted court proceedings in protest.

Police appeared reluctant to show strength against protesting lawyers and their presence was relatively thin.

In Quetta, ahead of the planned rally, a bomb exploded outside an anti-terrorism court, wounding three persons.

Lawyers in Pakistan have been holding rallies for the release of the detained Chauhdary Iftikhar and several other top judges who refused to take oath under Musharraf’s proclaimed Provisional Constitution Order .
