Pakistan coalition party shows reservation over tribal military operation

Islamabad : Paksitan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed reservation over the ongoing military operation in tribal areas, saying negotiations should be used instead of force to resolve the issue.

In his meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, the former Pakistani prime minister said that war against terror should get approval from the parliament.

The Pakistani government has started a military operation against extremist groups in northwestern Pakistan’s Khyber tribal agency on Saturday, the first major operation since the new government took power.

Sharif also protested the U.S.-led coalition’s cross-border attacks in Pakistan tribal areas and termed these attack being against sovereignty of the country.

The PML-N and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won the Feb. 18 general elections and formed coalition. Sharif’s party has insisted on engaging in dialogue with local militants in northwestern Pakistan’s tribal region.
