The women, rescued by Sulabh International Social Service Organisation from Alwar in Rajasthan, yesterday met diplomats and dignitaries at the United Nations and talked about the changes which, they said, had made them for the first time feel like human beings.

The are now all set to walk on ramp with leading models before representatives from more than 150 countries to show the confidence they had gained after being liberated.

Impressed by the work done by Sulabh, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs had invited them to come to New York to showcase to other NGOs how determination can help to uplift the most suppressed women.

Their stories of change in their lives from pain and suffering to hope and dignity moved one and all. Especially moving was a poem written by one of them on her experiences in the two highly contrasted worlds she had seen.

Sulabh was invited to interact with other NGOs worldwide who are engaged in similar task at a series of events organized to observe “Year of sanitation.” Sulabh’s founder Bindeshwar Pathak said that most important aspect of his movement is that the change was achieved without any agitation or demonstration.

The most important task, Pathak said, was to provide toilets which would not require manual cleaning and thus eliminate need for the task they did. The second task was to train them in various vocations so that they could have better means to earn livelihood. They were trained in making noodles, pickles, embroidery, among others.
