Beijing : China Wednesday praised domestic media for their timely and transparent coverage of rescue and relief operations following the killer earthquake that hit southwestern Sichuan province May 12, killing more than 80 people and rendering over a million homeless.
“The earthquake May 12 plunged the whole nation into deep sorrow, but media workers began non-stop coverage right away,” a statement by China’s national media regulators said Tuesday.
“In the past two months, their quick, transparent reports played an irreplaceable role in heartening the public and pushing forward disaster rescue and relief. Their work also won general acclaim in the international community,” said the statement issued jointly by the General Administration of Press and Publication and the All China Journalists Association.
The media regulators hailed 41 news organisation and about 143 journalists for their relentless efforts to cover all the aspects of the quake aftermath.
Among media organisations termed exemplary were the the People’s Daily, the CCTV and the Xinhua News Agency.
