Tokyo : Japan and the United States announced Thursday that they will introduce a nuclear screening project to detect nuclear and other radioactive materials in cargoes at Yokohama port against nuclear terrorism.
In a statement, the two governments said the joint pilot project, under the Megaports Initiative, is to be launched as part of measures to prevent terrorism and nuclear proliferation.
Equipment and facilities will be set up at the Yokohama port to detect radioactive materials and exchange data on illicit movements to prevent the smuggling of radioactive materials, it said.
The Megaports Initiative, which has included 27 countries and regions, is part of U.S. efforts to intensify cargo screening inspections to prevent inflows of nuclear materials at the ports of exporter countries.
