A.League, UN agree on strengthening cooperation in Iraq, other issues: Bin Heli

Geneva : At the conclusion of a 3-day meeting of the 10th Arab League (AL) meeting with the United Nations (UN) AL Under-Secretary-General for political affairs Ahmed bin Heli said Thursday that the Geneva meeting was successful. He told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the next general meeting between the two organizations to be held in 2010 will be presided by Arab League Secretary-General Amre Moussa and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

Ambassador Bin Heli added that the AL and the UN identified a number of issues on which they will coordinate and cooperate. On Iraq, for example, the two organizations reaffirmed the need to respect the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty and unity of Iraq. Both organizations stressed the necessity of cooperation on Iraq reconstruction, supporting the Iraqi economy, providing safety and security to all the Iraqi citizens.

The two sides decided to cooperate and coordinate concerning the local elections that will be held in Iraq during 2008. In addition they decided to give consideration to the problem of refugees and displaced Iraqis that has exacerbated particularly in Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon. The meeting agreed, among other matters, on the states objective of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, the principle of ‘Land for Peace’, the ‘Arab Peace Initiative’, the ‘Road Map” and the commitments of the Annapolis Conference. When tackling terrorism, the two organizations affirmed the need to enhance cooperation between the two in the filed of combating terrorism. The two organizations agreed on the need to implement related resolutions on the creation of a nuclear free zone in the Middle East.
