Gaza : The Interior Ministry of the deposed government of Hamas movement on Saturday denied that it has political prisoners in its jails in the Gaza Strip.
The Ministry said in a statement the Fatah movement alleged that there are Fatah prisoners in Hamas jails for political reasons “are just untrue claims.”
Last week, Fatah movement said that Hamas militias are keeping in its jails in Gaza more than 50 prisoners, all of them are Fatah members arrested by Hamas police.
Fatah said that since Hamas movement took control of the Gaza Strip in mid June last year, its police forces arrested and tortured more than 50 members of the movement, who are still in custody.
“All the prisoners that Fatah movement claims are imprisoned in our jails for criminal or security reasons,” Hamas Interior Ministry statement said.
Recently, several Palestinian factions led by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), mediated between the two rival movements to exchange prisoners based in Gaza and Ramallah.
Since Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip while Fatah movement and President Mahmoud Abbas ruled the West Bank, both sides had detained several dozens of members of the two movements.
The PFLP said that exchanging prisoners in Gaza and the West Bank would pave the road for launching a real comprehensive dialogue between Fatah and Hamas to end the status of inter-Palestinian split and division.
