“It was a targeted attack at security forces, carried out by a suicide bomber,” Islamabad’s deputy administrator Rana Abdul Jabbar said. At least a dozen people were injured, he added.

The blast occurred shortly after thousands of Islamists concluded a rally that commemorated the first anniversary of military operation against the extremists who were holed up in the city’s famous Red Mosque.

Some three dozen policemen were deployed at the security checkpost that was established a few hundred metres from the mosque.

“I can see nine bodies lying on the scene. All of them are policemen,” witness Nadeem Siddiqi said, adding the toll could be much higher as the place was littered with blood and body parts.
