Lucknow : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday said the fall of the Jammu and Kashmir government was a gimmick plotted together by the Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“It is clear there was an understanding between the two coalition partners that the PDP would first withdraw support and then the ruling Congress would kneel down to extremist and separatist forces,” BJP national vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters here.
He said there was no other explanation for this “than the fact that there was no need for this stunt when elections to the state were just two months away”.
Naqvi wondered why the PDP withdrew support to the government when the latter had already agreed not to allot any land to the Amarnath shrine board.
Naqvi was in Lucknow to hold meetings with state party leaders to discuss Uttar Pradesh candidates for the Lok Sabha elections ahead of the party’s central meeting July 12 for the purpose.
The BJP leader ridiculed the Samajwadi Party’s backing of the Congress on the nuclear deal and asked if the “deal within the deal would some way benefit Amar (Singh), Amitabh (Bachchan) and Ambani”.
“The people of the country want to know what was the midnight deal between the two parties and who are the beneficiaries,” Naqvi said.
“For all you know, this deal might be more dangerous for the country than the original India-US nuclear agreement.”
He said such questions were natural given that the previous Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh as well as the political grouping called United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA), of which Samajwadi Party was a partner, was formed on a non-Congress premise.
“Opposition to the nuclear deal was among the key of the UNPA,” he said.
