Powerful blast near Indian embassy, many killed

Kabul : A suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laden car just outside the Indian embassy here Monday killing between seven and 15 people, media reports said quoting the interior ministry.

DPA put the death toll at seven, saying five of the victims died instantly. Russian news agency RIA Novosti said at least 15 people were killed and more than 20 injured in the deafening explosion.

Afghan media reported that at least 15 people were killed or injured in the attack.

Doctors at a hospital said that within minutes 16 injured had been brought to the emergency wing.

DPA said that most Indian casualties were security personnel and were going to work when they were targeted around 8.30 a.m. outside the gate of the embassy.

“The surrounding area has been cordoned off and the embassy staff taken out,” said an Indian official.

A witness said: “The blast destroyed a number of vehicles parked around the area.”

As a result of the explosion, windowpanes of nearby buildings and several cars were damaged in the attack.

In recent years, Kabul has witnessed a series of bomb explosions and suicide attacks blamed on the Taliban.

More than 6,000 people were killed in violence in Afghanistan in 2007, nearly 2,000 of them civilians, according to official sources.
