Ponting had returned home from the West Indies last week after sustaining injury to his wrist during the third one-day international of Australia’s VB Tour of the West Indies.

“Ricky has sustained a tendon injury that requires repair of tissues that hold the tendon in place. This surgery was performed today (Monday),” said Cricket Australia (CA) Medical Officer Trefor James.

Ponting was reviewed by CA medical staff in consultation with Greg Hoy, a wrist specialist.

“Ponting’s recovery will be monitored in the coming weeks and a decision regarding his fitness for the upcoming series against Bangladesh and then the Champions Trophy will be made in due course,” James said.
