Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh assembly was adjourned sine die Wednesday as the main opposition Congress party continued to disrupt proceedings for the third consecutive day, protesting the communal violence in Indore.
The asembly monsoon session, which commenced July 7, was scheduled to conclude July 11 but Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani adjourned the house indefinitely as protesting Congress members remained near the speaker’s podium most of the time.
The party members had resolved they would not allow the house to function smoothly until their demand for a judicial inquiry into the communal riots in Indore and other places in the state was met.
Six people were killed in Indore and one in Satna in violence that followed the Jammu and Kashmir government’s decision to take back land the Amarnath shrine board was allotted for pilgrims’ facilities.
Besides a judicial probe, the Congress party also demanded Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s resignation and Rs.1 million compensation to the kin of the riot victims.
Though the house was adjourned two days ahead of the schedule, the entire official business – including the passage of 12 bills and the current financial year’s first supplementary budget of Rs.16.08 billion – was rushed through without any debate.
This was the last assembly session of the current government since the state is scheduled to go to polls later this year.
The house witnessed unruly scenes in the morning as the speaker called the members for question hour. While Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi started demanding a judicial inquiry, other Congress members hurled black ‘dupattas’ (stoles) and the assembly was adjourned for half an hour.
When the house reassembled, Congress members rushed to the speaker’s podium and even formed a human chain, ignoring the speaker’s repeated requests to return to their seats.
