Toyako, Japan : Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda said on Wednesday that Japan has sticked to its view of 50 percent cut of carbon emissions by 2050 from current level, in apparent contrast to the stand of others Group of Eight (G8) members.
Various members of G8 suggested their baseline year and Japan’s view is 50 percent reduction by 2050 on “current situation,” Fukuda told a press conference.
However, a statement issued here by the European Commission said that the G8 has agreed to reduce global emissions by at least50 percent “compared to 1990”.
In a statement on Tuesday, the G8 — Britain, Canada, Italy, Japan, France, Germany, Russia and the United States — said they agreed on the target of at least 50 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions but stopped short of setting a baseline year for the cut.
