Ranchi : The dawn-to-dusk statewide shutdown called by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over Janata Dal-United (JD-U) lawmaker Ramesh Singh Munda being shot dead by suspected Maoist guerrillas on the outskirts of Ranchi began Thursday morning.
NDA gave a call for the shutdown to protest the killing of former minister and JD-U legislator Munda Wednesday by Maoist rebels in S.S. High school of Bundu block of Ranchi.
Besides him, two security guards and a school boy were also killed when gunmen opened fire during a prize distribution function in the school.
“We have given the strike call to protest the killing of JD-U legislator Munda. In the Madhu Koda government first a Lok Sabha MP Sunil Mahto was killed and now a legislator has been killed. No one is safe in the state,” P.N. Singh, state BJP president, told reporters here Thursday.
Schools and shops were closed. Also, no long route buses were plying.
The slain JD-U lawmaker’s body was been kept in the state assembly. On Thursday evening, Munda will be cremated in Bundu.
Bihar assembly speaker and two Bihar JD-U ministers arrived here Wednesday night. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is also likely to attend the cremation of the Munda.
The Jharkhand government has recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the JD-U legislator’s killing.
