25 Congress legislators suspended in Chhattisgarh

Raipur : As many as 25 opposition Congress legislators were suspended from Chhattisgarh legislative assembly Thursday for shouting slogans in the house demanding the arrest of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in a murder case.

Dissatisfied with state Home Minister Ramvichar Netam’s reply on a recent murder of a man in Kanker district, the Congress legislators stormed into well of the house seeking the arrest of a BJP member of the Lok Sabha and a legislator for their alleged role in the murder.

They also demanded the BJP government should hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The opposition members said they would not allow the house to transact any business if their demands were not accepted. Deputy Speaker Badridhar Diwan then suspended all 25 Congress legislators present in the assembly.

But the quantum of suspension period was not announced.

On Wednesday, 26 Congress legislators were suspended for a brief period for trooping into well of the house to press for release of a jailed religious leader of the Satnami Community, Baldas, arrested in April.

The BJP has 52 members in the 90-member assembly while Congress has 34 legislators. The Bahujan Samaj Party and the Nationalist Congress Party have one member each. Two seats are vacant.
