New Delhi: Dr Syed Tahir Mahmood, Member of the Law Commission of India, withdrew his proposal related to Shariat Act 1937 on 12th July. He had sent his proposal to the Commission which was to consider it in a meeting on 16th July.
Dr Mahmood has earlier clarified that his proposal has nothing to do with common civil code or differences in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). He said such objections were raised about the proposal only because of lack of or wrong information.
His proposal had called for streamlining the Shariat Law, overcoming all differences of Fiqh and sect.
In a press statement released yesterday he said, “We believe that the proposal was harmless, necessary and would benefit the Muslim community. However, as the country is facing a political crisis, we think any dispute on the proposal would be harmful for the community, and that’s why we are withdrawing it.” He has asked the Commission office to remove it from the agenda of the Commission meeting due on 16th July.
