Agartala : As part of a nationwide campaign, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led ruling Left Front in Tripura Monday organised rallies to protest the India-US nuclear deal and price rise.
“We shall also expose and oppose the efforts of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies to incite communal polarisation in the country with a view to gaining political and electoral support,” said Bijon Dhar, CPI-M central committee member.
“Signing of the nuclear deal with the US (would be) a blow to India’s self-respect and it is against the country’s interests.”
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and another CPI-M central committee member Badal Chowdhury also lashed out at the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.
“India has huge resources of coal, gas and water besides thorium to generate enormous electricity, but the UPA government was only keen on signing a deal with imperialist forces like America to import expensive uranium,” Sarkar said while addressing a gathering at Dharmanagar, Tripura’s second largest commercial town.
He said: “Arunachal Pradesh and few other northeastern states can generate one-third of India’s total requirement of electricity, but unfortunately the union government, with a motive, overlooked this vital aspects.
“The Congress is trying to sell the country to the imperialist forces,” Sarkar, a CPI-M politburo member, alleged.
CPI-M central committee member and Tripura Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury said: “The Manmohan Singh government is going ahead with the deal without the support of parliament, and the people of the country, besides a large number of nuclear scientists.
“Singh has become subservient to the US and its President George W. Bush.”
“The UPA government led by Manmohan Singh has no responsibility and accountability towards the problems of the common people in the country as it is more loyal and dependable to the US,” Chowdhury told a gathering at Belonia in south Tripura.
