New Delhi : Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh Tuesday evening met Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and urged him not to quit the post despite pressure from his Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
“Our leader Mulayam Singh Yadav had asked us to meet Chatterjee. We urged him to continue as speaker,” Amar Singh told reporters after meeting the veteran parliamentarian at his residence here.
Amar Singh, who was accompanied by party MPs Ram Gopal Yadav and Akhilesh Singh Yadav, said the post was above party politics.
Chatterjee has been advised by the CPI-M to quit the post after it along with other Left parties withdrew support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government last week.
