Colombo : An ex-Tamil minority militant group is to submit a power devolution proposal to an all political party forum aimed at resolving the island’s long drawn-out separatist armed conflict, a top Sri Lankan government official said Tuesday.
Tissa Vitharana, the minister of Science and Technology and the chief of the All Party Representatives’ Committee (APRC) told reporters that the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) would submit the proposal soon to the APRC.
“In addition to its proposal already submitted the TMVP is to submit a further proposal based on devolution of power,” Vitharana said.
Vitharana said the APRC met on Monday after a long lay off as it was waiting for the nomination of TMVP representatives to resume the sittings.
The APRC came as a result of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse’s convening of the All Party Conference (APC) in 2006.
The APC was set up to formulate a solution among the south based political parties to solve the island’s long drawn-out separatist armed conflict.
The TMVP is a breakaway group of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which has been fighting against the government for more than 30 years.
Since its breakaway in 2004 the TMVP has converted to a Tamil democratic party.
The party’s deputy leader Sivanesaturai Chandrakanthan was appointed as the chief minister of the Eastern Provincial Council after the party won the May 10 local election.
