The main accused Ata A. R., 31, of Stuttgart, was given a 10-year jail term, while his accomplice Mazen H., 27 of Augsburg, was handed out a seven-year sentence.

The ringleader Rafik Y., 33, of Berlin was slapped with an eight- year prison time.

The court said it was proven during the trial that all three belonged to a foreign terror group.

Identified as suspected members of a Kurdish Islamist organization dubbed ‘Ansar Al Islam’, the trio plotted to kill Allawi at a Deutsche Bank reception in Berlin on December 3, 2004, according to German judicial authorities.

Police foiled the assassination attempt by arresting them that morning.

All three had also been accused of providing logistical support, collecting and delivering funds, to Ansar Al Islam, the statement said.

Ata R. and Rafik M.Y. also sought reportedly to recruit suicide bombers for Iraq, German officials claimed earlier.
