London : Michael Chopra, the first English Premier League footballer of Indian parentage, has split from his celebrity wife Heather Swan a month after they got married, a newspaper reported Wednesday.
The Sunderland footballer was thrown out of their one million pound home by Swan, a model who stars in WAGs Boutique, a reality television show with WAGs (acronym for Wives and Girlfriends, usually of famous footballers).
The Daily Telegraph said Swan had told friends the marriage is over.
The couple, who have a five-month old son, married on Friday June 13 in a 250,000-pound ceremony in Somerset.
Chopra, who earns 30,000 pounds a week, returned early from their honeymoon to Capri in the Mediterranean and Barbados, leaving Swan alone in the Caribbean.
Chopra, 24, is reportedly staying at a rented address about 24 km away from the marital home, the paper said.
While Swan refused to comment, Chopra said: “I’ve still got my wedding ring, haven’t I?”
Premiership side Sunderland signed Chopra for a four-year contract said to be worth up to five million pounds on July 13, 2007.
Some Sunderland fans who were unhappy with the high price tag for a player who was from Newcastle were won over when Chopra came on as a substitute and scored the winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur in injury time with 13 seconds remaining on the clock in the 2007-08 season.
This led to many Sunderland fans chanting “Chopra’s one of us!”
