Punjab imposes tax on ‘dhabas’

Chandigarh : Looking at the roaring business roadside dhabas do all over Punjab, the state government Wednesday imposed a “lump sum” tax on them.

Dhabas having an annual turnover of Rs.500,000 to Rs.1.5 mn will pay a tax of Rs.10,000 annually. Those earning Rs.1.5-3 million will cough up Rs.22,500.

Dhabas having a turnover of Rs.3-5 million will pay Rs.40,000 and those earning upto Rs.10 million Rs.75,000, an official spokesman said.

Dhabas with a turnover of Rs.10-15 million will pay Rs.125,000 as tax and those with a turnover of up to Rs.20 million will fork out Rs.175,000.
