Kabul : Afghan forces backed by NATO in a series of operations launched in parts of southern Kandahar province have killed and injured scores of rebels over the past two days, provincial governor Assadullah Khalid said Wednesday.
“The troops backed by air power have killed and injured scores of enemies in the restive Panjwai district,” Khalid told a press conference in Kandahar.
However, he failed to give the exact figures, but added there were no casualties on civilians.
Khalid noted that a Taliban group commander Mullah Janan was killed and his comrade Mullah Ghafar was wounded during the operation.
The governor said another operation in the neighboring Khakriz province left eight insurgents dead.
Khalid also stressed that several Pakistani nationals had been seen fighting alongside Taliban insurgents in the areas.
He said that the operation would continue to sweep out the areas from the insurgents and ensure durable stability in each and every parts of Kandahar.
Taliban militants have yet to make comment.
Afghanistan has witnessed a surge of violence and riot throughout the south to east over the past one month. Militancy and conflicts have claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people including over 700 civilians so far this year in the war-torn country.
