The cabinet took the decision to rename the Amausi airport, located midway between Lucknow and the industrial town of Kanpur, at a meeting here Thursday presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters.

The move is being seen as a sop to Charan Singh’s son, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh, ahead of the trust vote in parliament.

Charan Singh (1902-1987) was India’s sixth prime minister, serving from July 28, 1979 to Jan 14, 1980.
