FIH president Els Van Breda Vriesman said that the resignation of Charlesworth, an Australian, has been accepted by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

“It was up to the SAI whether they wanted Charlesworth to continue or not, and they have accepted his resignation. This ends his role in that capacity,” she said.

Asked whether Charlesworth’s role in India ended in a controversial manner, she said: “He was appointed as technical advisor as part of Project Promoting Indian Hockey, a joint initiative of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the FIH. He has done an excellent job in his tenure. His advises to improve hockey in India were of immense help.”

She said that it falls under the purview of the IOA if they want to have a foreign coach and advisor.

“The ad-hoc committee is capable of handling these issues. If they want any help from us, we are always there to guide. They will move forward and see what best can be done.”

Australian Charlesworth’s term in India, which started November last year, ended in a controversial manner as he was upset with many things from monetary benefits to working environment. He did not have much to do with the old dispensation and neither had any say with the newly formed ad-hoc committee.
