New Delhi : The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Saturday said all crane lifting operations at its construction sites will be carried out late in the night. The decision came a day after a heavy iron beam fell on a passing car and injured two people.
The DMRC held a meeting of its senior officials and decided that all “crane-lifting operations near roads and public areas will be carried out only between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.”
“Traffic movement will be stopped for short durations of 10 to 15 minutes when such lifting operations are carried out,” DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said.
Dayal said an independent audit will be carried out of all cranes at all Metro sites to again certify their working condition and check their age, quality and reliability. There are over 200 cranes working every day at Metro sites across the city.
On Friday evening, a malfunctioning crane at a metro construction site near Ram Monohar Lohia hospital dropped a four tonne iron beam on a passing Tavera car.
While the driver, Manoj, 23, was trapped inside the car for some time and sustained multiple fractures, another passenger sustained minor injuries.
Dayal said while the construction company has been asked to replace all unreliable cranes within 10 days, the DMRC has constituted a three-member team to probe the incident.
Delhi Metro is the modern mass transport system in the national capital and ferries over 700,000 passengers every day over its 68-km network. Construction works are on to add another 125 km to its existing network before the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
