New Delhi: Every child should be taught in her mother language; as Urdu issues have remained unresolved for the last 60 years, Urdu speakers and Urdu lovers should come out for the development and promotion of the language, said Vice President of India Mohd. Hamid Ansari.
He was inaugurating a 3-day national seminar on “Problems in promotion of Urdu” organized by the Sir Syed Foundation at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on 18th July. The Vice President said those who want to promote the language should not depend on the government alone.
“Instead of Urdu-medium schools I support Urdu being made compulsory in every school,” Hamid Ansari said. He said the number of Urdu speakers in the country is about five crores and definitely they all are not Muslims. Urdu is not the language of Muslims alone. It has nothing to do with religion, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Mushirul Hasan said that though Urdu is taught at universities but the research works in Urdu are not satisfactory.
Those attended the programme included ex-JMI Vice Chancellor Syed Shahid Mehdi, professors Shamsul Haq Usmani, Wahajuddin Alwi, Anees Ashfaque and Ibne Kanwal.
