By IRNA,
Tehran : Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Saturday that nice words from the US administration can by no means change the bitter realities of the past.
He made the remarks in response to claims by some US representatives on direct talks between Iran and the United States of America.
According to the Press Bureau of the Majlis, Boroujerdi said this in a meeting with Secretary General of Interparliamentary Union (IPU) Anders Johnson.
Talks between Iran and the US had pursued defined goals in the past and could be continued in the future on the same logical base, he said.
On issues of Palestine, Boroujerdi said it is time to realize the reason why efforts by the international community in the past 60 years to mediate between Arabs and the Zionist regime bore no fruits.
Ignoring the legitimate rights of Palestinian people such as the rights to repatriation to their motherland could be among such reasons, he said.
Holding a free referendum with the participation of all Palestinians would be regarded as the only solution which can put an end to current crisis in the Middle East region, he said.
Anders Johson, for his part, described Iran as a very significant country in the region and in the world and said the country plays a prominent role in international relations.
He also lauded the active presence of Iran’s Majlis in expansion of ties and cooperation with the Interparliamentary Union.
Referring to positive nuclear talks between Iran and the US undersecretary, he expressed the hope that the views of some US legislators who are against the policies of the Bush administration on holding direct talks between representatives of the two nations can help restore peace and security in the region.
The Americans are willing to have their interests section in Iran play a much more active role, he said.
