RLD to vote against UPA: Ajit Singh

New Delhi : In a severe blow to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president and former union minister Ajit Singh Sunday announced that his party will vote against it in Tuesday’s trust vote in the Lok Sabha.

The RLD stand came just minutes after Ajit Singh finished his meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati at her residence here.

Though Ajit Singh remained non-committal about his party’s support even after his meeting with Mayawati, he announced his decision to vote against the UPA just minutes later.

“We have decided to vote against the UPA on July 22,” he told reporters.

The Congress was trying to woo the Jat leader for support of his three RLD MPs. The union cabinet, led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had Thursday even decided to rename Lucknow’s Amausi airport after former prime minister and Ajit Singh’s father, Chaudhary Charan Singh.

After his meeting with Mayawati, Ajit Singh had earlier remained non-committal. “I came here to talk not only about the present political crisis but also about what future political affiliations will be,” Singh said after the meeting.

“She is a big leader. I have come to meet her now. I might have another meeting with her,” Singh said as he kept all parties guessing about which way his RLD will go.
