Kabul : Afghan police Sunday night put down the Taliban assault on checkpoints in southern Afghan province of Helmand leaving over 15 insurgents dead, an official said on Monday.
Mohammad Hussein Andiwal, the provincial police chief, told Xinhua that it occurred on late Sunday night when a group of Taliban militants launched a surprise attack on police checkpointsin Lashkar Gha district, capital of Helmand.
“Police returned fire at the insurgents and called for reinforcement,” he said. “Two hours’ fierce fighting claimed 15 rebels and two policemen.”
Meanwhile, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, the purported Taliban spokesman, confirmed the overnight checkpoints attack but rejected any casualties on the outfits.
Afghanistan has witnessed a surge of violence and riot throughout the south to east over the past months while militancy and conflict left more than 2,300 people including over 700 civilians dead so far this year.
