Ramallah : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said that there is still hope for reaching a peace agreement with Israel.
Abbas was speaking at a joint news conference with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem following their meeting Tuesday.
He said he was still hopeful for the peace process to be achieved between Palestine and Israel in spite of all obstacles and complications, expressing that the Israeli people and the Palestinians wanted peace.
Abbas however said that more efforts needed to be exerted to achieve peace, which is the only option for the Israelis and the Palestinians.
He said that it was essential to provide a better future for generations to come “or history will condemn us”.
Abbas also expressed his belief that if the peace process was achieved in the Middle East region, then world problems would come to an end.
For his part, Peres said both sides would work together to remove their disagreements.
He stressed the necessity of setting up a Palestinian state living side by side in peace with Israel, emphasizing that the Israelis still believe in peace. But, he pointed out, there were still obstacles impeding Israeli-Palestinian negotiations over the issue of Jerusalem.
