Exuding confidence, Gandhi, who was clad in his trademark kurta-pyjama, at one stage began narrating the heart-wrenching stories of two women living in the drought-stricken Vidharbha region of Maharashtra.

He gave their names as Shasikala and Kalawati but the opposition, especially the Bahujan Samaj Party, (BSP) took exception to this as Kalawati rhymed with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

As the protest intensified, Chatterjee suggested that Gandhi modify the name by dropping the wati, and the Congress MP immediately did so.

He thereafter referred to “Mrs. Kala”, much to the amusement of the treasury benches.
