Indore : The Madhya Pradesh police Tuesday said it hoped to get vital clues about the e-mail threat it received last week about possible terror attacks here and in Ujjain from a detained Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activist.
Ameel Pervez, a SIMI activist who was detained recently along with other members of banned outfit, was Monday remanded to police custody till July 25 for interrogation in connection with the e-mail.
An e-mail threat was received July 17 on the official website of Indore police, threatening to blow up important places in the temple town. The short message in English was sent in the ‘inform us’ column on the website, police sources said.
Though cyber experts have been brought in to trace the origin of the e-mail, the sender of the threat has not yet been identified.
Inspector General of Police (Indore range) Anil Kumar, acknowledging the e-mail threat, said: “We hope to get vital clues from the SIMI activist. Meanwhile, police personnel in Ujjain and Indore have been placed on alert and security has been beefed up at all important installations in both the places.”
Both Indore and Ujjain have been recently in the news for the arrests of several activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). The head of SIMI Safdar Nagori reportedly made Ujjain the group’s headquarters before it was banned.
Police, however, have not ruled out the possibility of the threat being a hoax. But they are not taking any chances and security has been beefed up at the railway station, airport, bus stands and other crowded places, officials said.
