Bangkok : A soldier was killed and five others critically wounded in a bombing and an ensuing clash in Thailand’s southernmost province of Narathiwat on Tuesday morning, police said.
The bombs, aiming an army patrol team, were triggered in Narathiwat’s Cho Airong district, the Bangkok Post reported on its website.
The unit of 12 soldiers were traveling on a pick-up truck when they were ambushed. The soldiers were heading to pick up teachers to escort them to school.
After the bomb attacks, the insurgents opened fire at the soldiers. The clashed lasted for 20 minutes.
A soldier was killed and five others were severely injured.
Thailand’s three southernmost provinces — Yala, Narathiwat andPattani have been troubled with insurgency-related violence which has claimed more than 3,500 lives since it resumed in early 2004.
