Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said his country will only facilitate “to a certain point” Iran’s talks with the US, France, the UK, China and Russia (G-5) plus Germany.

Babacan avoided the mediator title after meeting in Istanbul with Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, who made a stop there while returning from Geneva from talks attended by the US. Jalili met there with EU High Representative Javier Solana who has been waiting for Iran since June to trade its nuclear program for a package of incentives.

Iran defends its program and the right to enrich uranium as member the Non Proliferation Treaty in spite of US charges it plans to develop weapons of mass destruction.

US Secretary of States Condeleezza Rice gave Iran two weeks to come up with an alternative to deactivate its nuclear program before submitting anti-Iran sanctions to the UN Security Council.
