Tamil Nadu to get two atomic power plants: Karunanidhi

Chennai : Tamil Nadu is to get two atomic power plants of 4,000 MW each at a cost of Rs.320 billion, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced here Thursday evening after his return from New Delhi.

A central team will come on July 29 to finalise the location where the plants are to be set up, he told reporters here.

In the meanwhile, to tide over the power crisis, Southern Grid will give 100 MW power to Tamil Nadu. The power shortfall in the state is 600 MW.

Chenai has around 1-3 hours power cut daily. In areas outside the capital, the power outage extends upto 12 hours, though authorities maintain that it is only two hours.

The chief minister, who had gone to New Delhi Wednesday morning, returned Thursday evening after meeting central government leaders. His DMK party supported the UPA government on the trust vote in parliament, which the UPA won.
