Pyongyang : An official newspaper of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday called for a U.S.-DPRK peace treaty in order to give a formal ending to the Korean War, which broke out more than half a century ago.
The Rodong Sinmun daily urged the United States to make a resolution to replace the Armistice Agreement, a ceasefire pact signed 55 years ago, with a peace treaty, to ensure peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The newspaper said the situation on the Korean Peninsula remains extremely tense with no legal or institutional mechanism to guarantee peace and security. The United States’ anti-DPRK policy is to blame for the situation, the paper said.
The newspaper said signing a peace treaty is the key to ending the military confrontation and ensuring peace and security not only for the Korean Peninsula but for the rest of the Asia-Pacific region.
The three-year Korean War ended with an armistice agreement on July 27, 1953. The Korean Peninsula remains at war technically.
