Prague : The electromagnetic waves from the planned US radar base in the Czech Republic may adversely affect people living in the vicinity as well as those flying close to it, according to a study.
Experts say the planned no-fly zone should be widened to around 50 km to protect people’s health, both on ground and on board the plane.
Any plane within a radius of 50 km from the radar base is at potential risk. If the radar’s performance is increased, the no-fly zone should be extended to 80 km, the study said.
The official no-fly zone has been wrongly outlined which is dangerous with regard to human health, it said.
The defence ministry, however, disagreed with the conclusion of the study.
“The no-fly zone is safe,” Andrej Cirtek, spokesman of the ministry, said.
The US wants to build the radar base on the Brdy military grounds, 90 km southwest of Prague, and also plans to place 10 interceptor missiles there.
