New Delhi : Seventeen days after being impaled on an iron bar that pierced his liver, stomach and a lung and defying death, IT executive Supratim Dutta Tuesday walked out of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) – ready to get back to work and live his “second life”.
“I am living my second life. I don’t want to remember that day,” Dutta, 23, told reporters in a brief interaction at the hospital.
“I am grateful to god and doctors who saved my life.”
Dressed in a light blue striped shirt and black trousers, Dutta went on to say: “I have faced a lot of pain but my willpower helped me survive. I am thankful to those police personnel who brought me to the hospital.”
His doctors were triumphant too.
“His condition is absolutely normal and he can even go to office. But we have advised him to join office only after three weeks and that is just as a precaution,” Biplab Mishra, one of the surgeons overseeing his condition, told IANS.
“He is free to eat anything. There is no restriction. We have given him short-term antibiotic medication (for about a week) after which he needs no medicine,” added Mishra, who led an eight-doctor team to operate upon Dutta.
All Dutta needs to do is visit AIIMS “once a week to report about his health condition”.
Describing the case as a “learning experience”, Mishra said the possibility of an infection loomed but luckily no such problem was encountered.
“Since a five feet long iron bar had entered his body, we were expecting infection but we were fortunate enough not to face the problem so far. But the chance of infection is still there for next three weeks and here both Supratim and doctors need to be careful.”
Doctors have advised him not to lift any heavy objects for at least six months. “We have repaired so many organs. It is better not to lift any heavy object for at least six months as it may lead to bleeding.”
Dutta was going to his office early morning July 12 when his driver fell asleep at the wheel and rammed the vehicle into a Delhi Metro Construction site at Ghitorni, on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road in south Delhi.
An iron bar pierced through the bonnet of the car, impaled Dutta’s chest and fixed him to his car seat. Braveheart Dutta called his friend and family members in an immobile condition.
His friend and the police brought him to the hospital after cutting the bar with an iron cutter.
The iron bar had injured the front part of Dutta’s abdomen, liver (which sustained a 3-cm laceration), stomach (a 10-cm laceration). The diaphragm had ruptured in two places, and the upper half of his spleen was shattered.
There was a 4-cm laceration on the left lung and his ribs were fractured behind the torso along the chest wall. However, he was fortunate, as the iron bar had not affected his heart and the kidney.
Sukumar Dutta, Supratim’s father, said thankfully: “His willpower helped him to defy such a tragic incident of his life.”
