Thiruvananthapuram : For the first time since he returned to the Congress fold last December, veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran Tuesday attended the party’s political affairs committee meeting that decided to launch a movement across Kerala against the Left government.

The former Kerala chief minister, who left the Congress and started his own outfit only to return to the party fold last December, was usually staying away from routine meetings because he was upset that those who returned to the party with him were not given official posts in the state party structure.

That has been rectified with the national leadership deciding to include a few of Karunakaran’s close aides in party posts.

The Congress meeting Tuesday decided to take on the ruling Left across the state.

“We have decided to conduct meetings all across the state to take the message to the people about the need for the India-US nuclear deal,” said state Congress president Ramesh Chennithala about the deal that led to the Left withdrawing its support to the Manmohan Singh government.

Congress leaders have also decided to build up momentum in the state against price rise and the increase in electricity tariff and bus fares.
