Islamabad : More than 40 militants were killed and several were wounded in clashes with security forces in Pakistan’s lush-green northern Sawat valley on Wednesday.
Tension escalated in the valley hours after full mobilization of troops was ordered in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Tuesday night, and militants failed to respond to peace efforts.
According to Sawat Media Center, the two sides were exchanging heavy fire in Matta district in which more than 28 militants were killed so far, and several others were wounded.
Also, the center said in a statement, militants and security forces traded heavy fire after militants attacked a police station near Matta district.
It said at least 12 militants were killed in the incident.
There was no word available on casualties suffered by security forces. However, security sources told KUNA that more than 10 soldiers were also wounded in clashes.
