Kerala announces 5,000 scholarships for Muslims

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala government Wednesday announced 5,000 scholarships for Muslim students.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters that the steps for the welfare of the minority community were being taken after a report was submitted by Local Administration Minister Paloly Mohammed Kutty, who studied the Sachar Committee recommendations.

“We have decided to give 5,000 scholarships to Muslim students who pursue graduate and postgraduate courses. They will be eligible (to get) Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000 every year,” Achuthanandan said addressing a news conference here after the weekly cabinet meeting.

Muslim’s in Kerala account for 24 percent of the 32 million population.

“It has also been decided to set up a welfare fund and also extend pension benefits to madrassa teachers. Monthly stipends would be provided to all Muslim students who stay in hostels to prepare for competitive exams also,” said Achuthanandan.
